New Double-Decker Buses Launch in Santa Cruz
Long queues formed at the Santa Cruz Transport Interchange on Friday morning as the latest addition to the fleet—new double-decker buses—geared up to serve tourists and commuters. These buses are set to operate on routes 110 to Costa Adeje and 112 to Los Cristianos.
The unveiling of the green buses has drawn much excitement due to their London-inspired design, and many passengers are eager to experience the novelty. Young beachgoers mingled with those heading to work, creating a bustling atmosphere.
As Daniel, a regular commuter, boarded the bus, he pointed out the unique height of the vehicle compared to the usual buses. The double-decker offers an expanded view of Santa Cruz, providing a fresh perspective for passengers.
The transportation authorities introduced these buses on Wednesday, aiming to address the high demand seen on busy routes. The 110 route alone transported over 1.1 million passengers in 2025, reflecting a significant increase from the previous year.
Eusebio Arbelo, who travelled from Santiago del Teide for medical reasons, praised the initiative but stressed the importance of maintaining frequent service. “It’s a good idea if the frequency is kept up,” he noted, expressing concerns about long wait times.
While many passengers enjoy the novelty, there are still concerns over available seating. Some young women heading to the beach commented on the lack of space for their bags, contrasting with Shaira Marín, who appreciated the additional capacity for long journeys.
As the bus departed, the familiar sights of Santa Cruz turned into a panoramic view from above, capturing the vibrancy of daily life below. This new service aims to relieve passenger congestion, offering 85 seats compared to 59 in standard buses.
In the opening days, passengers have shared mixed reactions on social media, with some praising the improvements while others called for better scheduling and additional routes to meet the needs of those reliant on public transport.
Daniel encapsulated the essence of the service aptly: “If it runs on time and accommodates more people, that’s a win.”
As Tenerife integrates these buses into its transport network, the challenge remains to ensure they truly meet the demands of commuters and provide a reliable alternative to car travel.
