Motions Set to Revive Abandoned Cinema in Valle de Guerra

La Laguna’s council will discuss a proposal to acquire the historic La Paz cinema in Valle de Guerra, which has been empty for over 30 years. The initiative aims to transform the iconic building into a Community and Youth Centre for local residents.

Presented by councillor Saúl Alberola, the motion highlights the urgent need for public spaces that cater to cultural, youth, and community activities. Despite an existing centre in the area, Unidas se puede believes it is insufficient to meet the growing demands of local associations and young people.

“The restoration of La Paz isn’t just nostalgic; it’s about the future. This building is part of our community’s history, and we need to bring it back to life for everyone,” said Alberola.

The cinema’s location is strategic, near schools, sports facilities, and social amenities, making it ideal for fostering community interaction among youth, associations, and families. The council had considered acquiring the site over 15 years ago as part of the 2009 General Urban Planning Plan, although that proposal never materialised.

Unidas se puede proposes starting negotiations for its purchase and commissioning a technical study to assess whether the building can be restored. If rehabilitation is deemed unfeasible, the plan includes demolishing the structure and replacing it with a modern facility that meets current accessibility, sustainability, and energy efficiency standards.

“La Laguna must invest in its villages, reviving abandoned spaces to create hubs for culture and community engagement is vital for strengthening local life and providing opportunities for younger generations,” Alberola added.

The proposal also aims to secure external funding and initiate a participatory process with local associations and residents to determine future uses of the site. The goal is for the new facility to adequately address the needs of Valle de Guerra and become a cultural and social beacon for the northeast of La Laguna.
