Heatwave Hits the Canaries and Southern Spain

Temperatures in Gran Canaria are expected to exceed 34°C, particularly in the southern and western regions, as the islands brace for high temperatures, strong winds, and rough seas this Monday. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) issued warnings for these weather conditions across the archipelago.

In addition to the heat, there will be dust clouds, especially in the eastern province. Overall, temperatures are forecasted to rise moderately, with the interior of Gran Canaria experiencing significant highs between 30°C to 32°C across other areas.

Monday will see ten autonomous communities in Spain on alert due to maximum temperatures, heavy rain, or storms. Many areas, particularly in the Guadalquivir Valley, could approach 40°C, and strong localized thunderstorms with potential hail are expected in parts of eastern Spain.

The winds will generally be trade winds, ranging from moderate to strong, with gusts potentially exceeding 80 km/h in the southeastern and northwestern slopes. Meanwhile, coastal breezes will prevail in the mountainous islands, while the high peaks will see winds from the east.

The heat alerts will remain active from 1 PM to 9 PM, particularly affecting Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid, and the Canaries. Cities like Huelva, Seville, Córdoba, and Jaén may reach highs of 39°C, while Ciudad Real, Badajoz, and Cáceres could see up to 38°C.

Weather conditions will be stable across the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with clear skies or some high clouds. However, developing clouds in the eastern half are likely to lead to strong scattered rain and thunder, especially in Teruel, the Valencia Community, and parts of Castilla-La Mancha.

In the Cantabrian region, low clouds and light rain are expected during the morning, while some areas may face fog. The forecast indicates a rise in temperatures across the Canaries, with Gran Canaria’s interior bracing for highs of 36-40°C this week.

Winds are generally expected to be light to moderate, with variations depending on the region, while draughts and strong winds are anticipated in the Canaries.
