Expansion Plans Announced for Tenerife’s Southern Hospital
Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo has revealed that the project to expand the Southern Hospital in Tenerife will be awarded next week. This announcement came during a visit to the newly expanded Day Hospital for Oncology and Haematology, which has recently doubled its capacity following an investment of €885,268.
Clavijo highlighted that the upcoming awarding of the project will lead to the start of construction next year. This expansion follows the recent opening of palliative care services, a pharmacy, and an increase in the number of operating theatres from two to four.
“The commitment of the Canary Islands Government to provide the Southern Hospital with the necessary infrastructure and resources is clear,” he stated, emphasising the ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare quality for residents.
The new Day Hospital for Oncology and Haematology, situated in a separate building adjacent to the main hospital, has increased its treatment spots from 14 to 30 and features three beds, two waiting rooms, and a pharmaceutical dispensing area.
Since beginning operations two years ago, the unit has administered 4,661 therapies to 582 patients, with a steady increase reflected in the 2,734 treatments provided in 2025 and 1,233 recorded in the early months of this year. The staff comprises four nurses, a healthcare technician, and various specialists to ensure detailed monitoring and administration of treatments.
The facility offers chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies, supplemented by educational support for patients. This outpatient model aims to lower emotional stress and reduce infection risks compared to traditional inpatient care.
Furthermore, the surgical activity at the Southern Hospital has surged by 70% from 2023 to 2025, rising from 2,600 to nearly 4,500 operations. Since July 2023, external consultations have surpassed 150,000 appointments, with 63,000 in the last financial year alone. The paediatric department has seen a 148% rise due to the addition of four new sub-specialties. Currently, the Southern Hospital hosts external consultations in 24 medical and surgical specialties.
