Tragic Loss for Canary Islands Community in Venezuela
The President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, expressed deep sorrow on Friday following the death of Chabela Jara, the director of the government’s office in Venezuela. Jara tragically lost her life during earthquakes in La Guaira.
Clavijo shared his heartfelt tribute on social media, reflecting on Jara’s tireless efforts to improve the lives of Canarians in Venezuela. He described her as a loyal companion and crucial figure for the Canary Islands community across the Atlantic. “I face the day with pain and gratitude, knowing she dedicated her life to caring for our people,” he wrote.
The first vice president of the Parliament, Ana Oramas, also mourned the loss, sharing her sadness after days of uncertainty. “We all hoped for a miracle, but it didn’t come. She was my great friend. We travelled across Venezuela together for over 27 years,” she noted, paying homage to Jara’s lasting impact on the Canarian community in the country.
Rosa Dávila, President of the Tenerife Cabildo, highlighted the personal connection she had with Jara. She recalled trying to reach her during the tragedies, only to learn that Jara’s building had collapsed. Dávila expressed her profound grief, reflecting on their long friendship and Jara’s dedication to supporting Canarians in Venezuela. “Your commitment was unfaltering, and you will always be in my heart,” she concluded.
Jara’s death has left a significant void within the community, as many remember her unwavering dedication to her homeland and its people.
