The Most Exclusive Hotel in Tenerife: Home to Royals, Hollywood Stars, and Nobel Laureates for Over 75 Years

Few people are aware that in the heart of Santa Cruz de Tenerife lies one of the most iconic buildings in the Canary Islands. This hotel has hosted royalty, Nobel laureates, Hollywood stars, international artists, and some of the most influential figures of the last century. We are talking about the historic Iberostar Heritage Grand Mencey, regarded as the premier hotel in Tenerife since the mid-20th century and one of the archipelago’s most recognisable establishments.

A Name with Guanche Roots

The hotel’s very name is a declaration of Canarian identity. Before the Castilian conquest, the ancient rulers of Tenerife were known as “menceyes,” a term equivalent to kings or leaders of various territories on the island. Upon opening its doors in 1950, the clear objective was to become the main hotel reference in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. More than seven decades later, it continues to hold that privileged position.

Designed by architect Enrique Rumeu de Armas, the building was conceived to represent the elegance and prestige of an island beginning to open up to international tourism.

A Hotel Favoured by Royalty and Hollywood

Over the years, the hotel has welcomed some of the most notable figures from around the world. Among its historic guests are artists like Joan Miró, writers such as Camilo José Cela, and legendary actresses like Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren. International stars, including Matt Damon, have also graced its rooms, along with members of the Spanish Royal Family and numerous personalities connected to politics, culture, and business.

A Symbol of Santa Cruz

Beyond its illustrious guests, the hotel has become one of the most recognisable images of the Tenerife capital. Its neocolonial architecture, interior galleries, traditional Canarian patios, and surrounding gardens have been part of the urban landscape of Santa Cruz for over 75 years. Furthermore, the building is protected as a Cultural Heritage Site, a recognition that underscores its historical and architectural significance within the island.

A significant renovation in the last decade modernised its facilities while preserving the essence that established it as a benchmark for luxury tourism in the Canary Islands.

Your Gateway to Discovering Tenerife

Its location is another of its major attractions. Situated next to García Sanabria Park, it provides easy access to some of the capital’s most emblematic locations. Just minutes away are well-known spots such as the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África, the Church of the Conception, and the commercial and historic centre of Santa Cruz.

One of the great privileges of staying in this area is its proximity to San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has preserved its urban layout from the 16th century and is considered one of the most significant historical complexes in the Canary Islands.
