Transformation of Viera and Clavijo Cultural Park Approved by Santa Cruz de Tenerife Council
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Council has approved modifications to the contract for the design and management of the Viera and Clavijo Cultural Park. According to the council’s statement, the aim is to progress with the comprehensive transformation of the cultural complex and to draft a unified project for the future Pérez Minik Auditorium and adjacent areas. This measure, sanctioned by the municipal Governing Board, will also unblock initiatives that have been on hold since 2021 and reorganise all planned interventions within the site.
New Approach
The new approach includes the integration of the historic building, the future Pérez Minik Auditorium, and the outdoor spaces into a single cultural project, as detailed by the council.
Key Developments
Among the principal updates are:
– Adaptation of the main building to the technical requirements needed for the future establishment of CaixaForum Tenerife.
– Unification of the pending activities surrounding the Pérez Minik Auditorium and the adjacent outdoor areas.
The transformation project for the Viera and Clavijo Cultural Park began in 2020 with the commissioning of the comprehensive intervention to architect Fernando Menis. Since then, rehabilitation work has been undertaken on the main building; however, it is noted that the progress of certain actions has been impeded by urban and heritage-related discrepancies concerning the future of the Pérez Minik Theatre and other areas within the complex.
Future Project
The newly approved modification will facilitate the development of a project titled “New Pérez Minik Theatre and Adjacent Outdoor Areas.” The goal is to:
– Enhance connectivity between the various spaces.
– Optimise functionality.
– Increase capacity for hosting large-scale cultural activities.
Finally, it is worth noting that this decision follows heritage reports issued by the Cabildo of Tenerife, which concluded that the potential demolition of the current Pérez Minik Theatre would not impact the protected values of the Cultural Heritage site of the former Colegio de La Asunción, where the complex is located.
