The Town Hall of La Laguna has begun restoring the Homenaje a Los Sabandeños monument, a piece by Fernando García Ramos erected in 1986 at Punta del Hidalgo. The project, budgeted at €5,938.50, is part of the second phase of a municipal sculpture restoration programme that totals nearly €150,000 this year.
Cultural Heritage Councillor Adolfo Cordobés highlighted the importance of this project, stating that it reflects a planned approach to maintenance, preventing severe deterioration. He emphasised that preventative conservation is crucial to avoiding costly restorations and ensuring the artworks remain part of local life.
Located at a key entry point to Punta del Hidalgo, the monument shows signs of dirt, weathering, and surface cracks, which detract from its aesthetic value. The restoration will be carried out by the professional team at Esculturas Bronzo, involving pressure washing, crack filling, and a new bronze plaque.
The monument, funded through public and private contributions, features symbolic elements associated with the local group and is designed to withstand coastal conditions. However, ongoing exposure to the marine environment has led to its current state of disrepair, prompting its restoration.
This effort is part of broader actions within the municipal programme, which has already seen the cleaning of the La Milagrosa statue and the restoration of a bronze ring dedicated to Laura de la Puerta Guillén. Plans are also in place for further projects, including the restoration of the Padre Anchieta monument.
Additionally, the Cultural Heritage department is working on a programme to document and promote the local sculptures, aiming to engage the community and increase awareness about the town’s artistic heritage.
