Tenerife Issues Fire Alert Amid Rising Temperatures
The Tenerife Island Council has implemented Grade 1 fire prevention measures following a risk alert from the Canary Islands Government due to adverse weather conditions. This resolution, effective from 7 a.m. on Tuesday, will remain in place until the alert is lifted.
Rosa Dávila, the council president, urged citizens to act responsibly in light of the heightened risk. She emphasised the importance of prevention, stating, “Protecting our forests means protecting Tenerife, our natural heritage, and public safety.” Dávila called for maximum caution and community cooperation.
The measures apply to areas at risk of wildfires and aim to reduce activities that could spark a fire, particularly given the current high temperatures and low humidity. Notably, all outdoor fires, including barbecues, are banned, and smoking is prohibited in recreational areas, campsites, and public spaces in these high-risk zones.
Firework displays and activities using tools that could create sparks are also suspended. Nevertheless, access to the island’s roads and properties remains open, as does cycling or horseback riding in forest areas. However, the council advises limiting time spent in wooded regions during the alert.
Residents are encouraged to avoid forested areas unless absolutely necessary and to exercise caution during any activities that could lead to a fire. The council also urges event organisers to enhance safety measures.
Continuous monitoring of weather conditions and risk levels is underway, with coordination between emergency services to ensure public safety and territory protection.
