Canary Islands Government Launches Aid Plan for Earthquake Victims in Venezuela
The Canary Islands government is implementing a three-month action plan to address the basic needs of Canarians, their descendants, and those affected by recent earthquakes in Venezuela. During a meeting in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, officials discussed urgent requirements, particularly in the most impacted regions of Miranda, Caracas, and La Guaira.
José Luis Perestelo, the Deputy Regional Minister of External Action, and José Téllez, Director General of Emigration, outlined efforts to convert the Canary Islands’ delegation in Venezuela into a logistics hub for aid and donations. They highlighted the government’s commitment to providing a coordinated and sustained response.
Téllez emphasized the need for immediate support while stressing the importance of a structured plan to ensure basic social and healthcare needs are met. Urgent requirements include potable water and non-perishable food, particularly high-protein canned goods. There is also a pressing demand for medical supplies, including anti-inflammatories, pain relief medicines, and specific medications for chronic conditions.
The Canary Islands government is liaising with distributors in unaffected regions to expedite the acquisition and distribution of these essential products. A meeting to establish a distribution plan will take place on Tuesday at 9 AM local time.
Aid will be delivered through permanent points and a mobile service to reach isolated areas. The government is also maintaining a medical emergency operation in Caracas, offering various medical specialties through local Canarian entities.
In addition, a direct phone line—0424-286.99.65—has been set up for Canarians and their descendants in Venezuela to seek information as they re-establish in-person support at the delegation.
Multiple local Canarian organisations throughout Venezuela, such as FECAN and the Canarian Home in Venezuela, are also coordinating to provide assistance, ensuring that aid reaches those in need.
