The Cabildo de Tenerife hosted the final gala and awards ceremony for the fourth edition of the Insular School of Young Writing on Tuesday. This event was part of the Insular Reading Promotion Programme (Pialte) and took place in the Noble Hall. Efraín Medina, the councillor for Employment, Education, and Youth, attended along with a panel of judges, including writer Sergio Barreto and literary school director Antonia Molinero.

During the event, they launched the book Relatos II (Editorial Flamboyán), which features 512 stories from students over the last two editions of the programme. Medina praised the project for highlighting the students’ talent and emotional depth, commending the teachers and Pialte agents for their dedication to nurturing young writers.

This year’s edition saw a record 339 stories submitted from 13 schools, involving 25 classes with groups of 15 to 25 students. The awards were presented as follows:

  • First prize: Loana Garrido Cordero from IES San Matías for Lo que la cámara ya sabía.
  • Second prize: Fatour Sarr from IES Teobaldo Power for Las gemelas, el timbre y el vecino gruñón.

Both winners received an iPad, a selection of books, a diploma, and a place on the “Young Writers Summer” course at the Literary School.

Third to fifth prizes went to Blanka Kata Patkos, Erick Raudel Borges Castillo, and Leila Plasencia Batista, who also received diplomas and the summer course. Those finishing sixth to tenth, including Hugo Alayón Caron and Ainara García Rodríguez, received diplomas and a selection of books.

Established in 2023, the Insular School of Young Writing aims to support young people with a passion for writing. This pilot initiative fosters a nurturing environment for aspiring young authors through specialised classes and tutoring. The programme includes a virtual classroom and writing notebooks, covering topics from idea generation to narrative conflict resolution.

Relatos II is now available as a free e-book on the Tenerife Joven and Educa websites. Through this project, the Cabildo de Tenerife reinforces its commitment to educational innovation and creating opportunities for students.
