New Mobility Plan for Anaga Rural Park Unveiled
A comprehensive mobility plan for Anaga Rural Park aims to tackle traffic issues and enhance sustainable transport in the area. The plan, commissioned by the Cabildo in December 2024, has been shared with local councils and residents, who are currently reviewing it and expected to provide feedback by September.
Eulalia García, the island’s mobility councillor, made the announcement during a council session. This meeting began with a minute’s silence for the victims of recent earthquakes in Venezuela, with the Cabildo reaffirming its commitment to humanitarian efforts.
García explained that the mobility strategy outlines eight key areas with 24 proposed measures. These include regulating private vehicle use, managing access with sensors, improving public transport, and creating a digital platform for bookings.
In addition, the council is working on various projects aimed at enhancing mobility near the Pico del Inglés, establishing a park-and-ride scheme in La Laguna, and updating regulatory frameworks for discretionary public transport.
Responding to criticism from socialist councillor Javier Rodríguez about the government’s credibility regarding previous promises, García highlighted a protocol established in April 2025 aimed at limiting the size of tourist buses in Anaga. Rodríguez also pointed out delays in creating a proposed park-and-ride facility at Las Canteras, insisting that local residents are frustrated with unfulfilled commitments.
Separately, Blanca Pérez, the natural resources councillor, discussed improvements to hiking trails and access points, including plans to regulate vehicle access to rural areas to avoid competition for limited parking spaces.
In further developments, the Cabildo approved a budget modification of around £10 million, which includes £3.3 million to create shaded areas in 77 schools across Santa Cruz, La Laguna, and Tegueste, benefiting over 24,000 students. Other budget allocations include funding for installing fibre optics in Teide National Park and developing a parking reservation system, as well as £96,000 for park-and-ride facilities in Anaga.
