La Laguna Invests in Eco-Friendly Agriculture
The La Laguna Council has granted a €45,000 subsidy to the Canary Islands Farmers and Livestock Coordinating Organisation (COAG) to promote eco-friendly agricultural practices in the area. The agreement was signed by Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez and COAG President María del Carmen Pérez.
Gutiérrez emphasised the importance of encouraging the use of organic materials, local products, and sustainable fertilisation methods. He stated that this approach supports soil health and productivity while reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.
Councillor for Rural Development Christina Ledesma added that the agreement aims to improve water use efficiency on local farms. It includes concrete actions for monitoring, technical assistance, and training for both citizens and agricultural professionals.
Ledesma highlighted the need to enhance public understanding of alternative methods, noting their benefits for plant health and product quality.
The agreement also focuses on preserving and multiplying local seeds, ensuring access and collaboration in agroecology. A common seed fund will be accessible to farmers and horticulturists in the community.
Under this agreement, COAG will deploy a technical team to visit participating farms, providing on-site guidance on fertilisation, irrigation, and integrated pest management.
Additional initiatives include the establishment of Agroecological Common Interest Groups, specialised training events, and the publication of a directory for farms that can supply fertilisers, alongside the collection and evaluation of production analyses in partnership with local producers.
