Aguere Hosts Commemorative Event for LGBTIQA+ Rights
The Plaza del Adelantado in San Cristóbal de La Laguna transformed into a vibrant hub for tolerance and solidarity ahead of International LGBTIQA+ Pride Day, celebrated globally this Sunday.
Organised by the local council’s Equality Department, in collaboration with various LGBTIQA+ groups, the event highlighted ongoing struggles for equal rights. Representatives from the LGBTIQA+ community, local authorities, and other Canary Islands institutions gathered to advocate for the rights that have been hard-fought but still face challenges.
A notable addition this year was the participation of the Red Asterisco, a network supporting LGBTIQA+ rights that has engaged 17 of Tenerife’s 31 municipalities, including La Laguna.
Following the ceremonial raising of the Pride flag, local LGBTIQA+ councillor Dailos González addressed attendees. He emphasised the importance of diversity, equality, respect, and love as the foundations for a democratic and inclusive society. “There can be no equality without respect; no freedom without respect,” he stated. He urged for collective commitment to recognising and protecting diversity.
González also stressed that sustainable rights require ongoing social and institutional commitment, urging for active citizen participation in fostering mutual respect and empathy.
Representatives from Red Asterisco, Fran Barroso and Eva Hernández Morera, echoed these sentiments, insisting on unity despite differences. They reaffirmed their commitment not to marginalise anyone based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.
The day included a musical performance by Héctor Artiles, who sang “Color Esperanza” and “How Deep Is Your Love”. Awards for ‘La Laguna Orgullosa’ were presented to LGBTIQA+ groups, alongside the debut of the celebration’s official anthem, “La Laguna Orgullosa de ti”.
Attending the official ceremony were Dailos González, members of the local council, and Patricia León, the director of Equality for the Cabildo of Tenerife.
