On Wednesday, 24th June, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded six earthquakes in the Canary Islands, including one with a magnitude of 2. The most significant tremors were concentrated in Vilaflor, Guía de Isora, and the Atlantic.
The earthquakes registered include:
– Guía de Isora: magnitude 2 at 11:58
– Vilaflor de Chasna: magnitude 1 at 09:36
– Guía de Isora: magnitude 1.3 at 03:27
– Guía de Isora: magnitude 0.3 at 01:42
– Atlantic: magnitude 1.7 at 01:21
– Vilaflor de Chasna: magnitude 0.9 at 00:24
In total, 23 minor earthquakes have been recorded between Tuesday and Wednesday, all with magnitudes below 2, except for the one in Guía de Isora. Most of these tremors were located in the western islands or in the ocean, primarily in the channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
While these tremors are generally not strong, residents are advised to know how to respond during an earthquake. The IGN recommends the following actions:
– Get low, take cover under a table, and hold on
– Stay calm and maintain balance if possible
– Inside a building, stay away from furniture, windows, and lighting
– Outside, move away from buildings, walls, and electrical poles
– If driving, stop in a safe place, turn on hazard lights, and remain in the vehicle
– If in a wheelchair, stop in a safe spot and protect your head with your arms
– In crowded places, protect your head and find shelter under seats or tables
