San Juan Bonfires in A Coruña: The Magical Night Welcoming Summer

The San Juan Bonfires in A Coruña are one of Galicia’s most emblematic celebrations and one of the most significant fire festivals in Spain. Declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest, each 23rd of June, thousands gather on the beaches of Riazor and Orzán to experience a night filled with tradition, music, and bonfires.

A Tradition with Centuries of History

The so-called Noite Meiga combines ancient pagan customs linked to the summer solstice with elements of the Christian tradition associated with St. John the Baptist. Fire symbolises purification and renewal, which is why it is customary to jump over the bonfires and partake in various popular rituals.

The Grand Spectacle of A Coruña’s Beaches

On the night of June 23rd, the coastline of A Coruña transforms into a vast festive stage. From the early afternoon, traditional sardine barbecues and gatherings of family and friends begin. As midnight approaches, the city experiences one of its most anticipated moments with the burning of the falla and a fireworks display over the bay.

The celebration extends across numerous neighbourhoods, where locals and associations organise cultural activities, concerts, and culinary gatherings that fill the streets with a festive atmosphere.

Gastronomy and Symbolism

The scent of grilled sardines is one of the main highlights of the evening. The popular Galician saying, “Polo San Xoán, a sardiña molla o pan,” encapsulates the importance of this product at a festival where barbecues and the traditional queimada are also prominent.

San Xoán 2026

The 2026 edition will feature extensive security and cleanliness measures, alongside awareness campaigns to preserve the beaches and promote responsible celebrations. The City Council has reinforced prevention and sustainability measures to ensure the success of one of the most crowded nights of the year.

More than just a festival, the San Juan Bonfires represent a key aspect of A Coruña’s identity, a night where fire, sea, and tradition unite to welcome summer in a unique and magical atmosphere.
