The patron saint festivities of the Villa de La Orotava, in honour of San Isidro Labrador and his wife, Santa María de la Cabeza, commemorate the infracrucis of Corpus Christi on June 11, alongside a series of celebrations. On this traditional day, which has come to define the municipality, the occasion is marked not only by processions but also by floral carpets.
From 07:00, attendees will be greeted by the traditional ringing of the bells from the parish of Nuestra Señora de La Concepción. At 07:15, a quarter of an hour later, the Eucharist will be celebrated at the same location. Here, floral carpet creators will gather to kick off the main event of the day: the creation of floral carpets surrounding the Grand Carpet in the Town Hall square.
At 10:30 in the morning, the 42nd ‘Villa de La Orotava’ Wine Competition will take place at the Sociedad Liceo de Taoro, marking its forty-eighth edition. This second phase will feature wines from local producers and island-designated wines. The event is organised by the Sociedad Cultural Liceo de Taoro, with support from the Town Hall of La Orotava, the Regulatory Council of Wines from the Valley of La Orotava, and the Insular Council of Tenerife.
Floral Carpets in the Streets
Additionally, from early morning, 36 groups and families will be seen creating the carpets throughout the historical centre. At 12:00, the Holy Sacrament will be solemnly displayed in the main parish of La Orotava, followed later by the second Eucharist at 18:30. This latter service will be attended by Bishop Eloy Santiago of the Nivariense Diocese and priests from the diocese visiting the Villa that day.
Musically, there will be a performance by the Choral Groups of La Villa de La Orotava to commence the procession of the Holy Sacrament along the carpeted route. The clergy, brotherhoods, and local authorities will be in attendance. Upon entering the Town Hall square, a message will be delivered to the assembled faithful before the Holy Sacrament, accompanied by the chant of ‘Tantum Ergo’ and the Eucharistic hymn ‘Cantemos al Amor de los Amores’, performed by the Villa’s choirs and the Orotava Musical Group.
Finally, as a conclusion to this festive day, there will be a ‘Solemn Blessing with His Divine Majesty’ from the central Town Hall balcony, followed by a procession back to the parish where the Reservation of the Holy Sacrament will take place, accompanied by hymns of praise.
