Over 60 groups from various sectors will create the carpets using flowers, coloured sand, heather, and other materials until the early afternoon hours.
The main streets of La Laguna will be adorned with traditional carpets this Sunday to celebrate the Corpus Christi festival. The event will culminate in a solemn mass, followed by the Corpus procession, which will depart from the Cathedral after the ceremony starting at 5:00 PM.
This year’s event is expected to feature more than 60 carpets made by various groups, including associations, educational centres, religious brotherhoods, and even families. They have been working on these spectacular, vividly coloured tapestries since yesterday afternoon.
The Corpus Christi festival is the oldest religious procession in Tenerife, with a history spanning over five centuries. In La Laguna, the traditional carpets were first introduced by the former sacristan of La Concepción, Luis Marrero, who pioneered the first carpet in 1907.
Today, the Corpus Christi tradition is also celebrated in villages and other neighbourhoods of the municipality, including Valle de Guerra, Tejina, Punta del Hidalgo, Finca España, and Taco, among others.
