Travel Agencies Sector Continues to Thrive in the Canary Islands
The travel agencies sector is experiencing ongoing growth in the Canary Islands, both in terms of retail outlets and employment. According to data presented on Saturday at the III Annual Meeting of the Canary Islands Association of Travel Agencies and Tour Operators (ACAVyT), held in Los Realejos, the sector generates approximately €1.359 billion annually in the islands. This activity contributes around 3% to the region’s GDP and supports about 7,300 direct, indirect, and induced jobs, as reported by the organisation.
Increased Specialisation
ACAVyT emphasises that this growth is no longer solely reliant on traditional intermediation. It now hinges on specialisation, personalised advice, close customer relationships, and collaboration among various stakeholders in the tourism industry. The association underscores that the tourism market is in a state of constant transformation. In this context, the unique value of agencies increasingly lies in their experience and ability to provide tailored professional support in response to the evolving expectations of travellers.
Nearly 400 Retail Outlets
During the meeting, ACAVyT President Ignacio Poladura highlighted the adaptability of travel agencies and their establishment as highly specialised companies. Currently, the Canary Islands boasts around 400 retail outlets, nearly half of which are members of ACAVyT.
A Transforming Sector
The meeting also featured José Manuel Sanabria, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Employment for the Government of the Canary Islands; Carlos Garrido, President of the Spanish Confederation of Travel Agencies; and Dimple Melwani, Chief Executive of Tenerife Tourism. The discussions focused on the role of agencies at a time when travellers are seeking increased security, guidance, and tailored offerings.
Positive Forecasts
Carlos Garrido stated that, despite the current international uncertainty, tourist demand remains strong. The CEAV President noted that all indicators suggest the sector is set to close another record-breaking year, as Canary Islands agencies strive to strengthen their position within the tourism industry.
