Iván Ferreiro to Perform at Tenerife Music Festival

Iván Ferreiro (55): “I Tour and Then Make Albums; It’s My Way of Life”

Galician musician Iván Ferreiro will perform in Tenerife at a festival, as part of a tour celebrating over three decades of music. He will take the stage next Saturday, 13 June, at the Tenerife Music Festival.

A Different Format

This will mark his return to Tenerife, having last performed in La Laguna during the Cristo celebrations last summer. He reflects on whether the concert format influences the experience: “Generally, the format changes based on how long I am allowed to perform. It mainly relates to the time slot rather than anything else. I always aim to create concerts that are as complete and similar as possible, although sometimes festivals require a reduced set, and we need to adapt.”

A New Audience

Festivals also provide an opportunity to reach a different audience, one that may not specifically come to see him. “On that day, if I’m not mistaken, I’ll be sharing the stage with Camilo, Pablo Alborán, and Ana Mena. It’s great for me to see them live, as I haven’t had the chance before. Many festivals I perform at feature different types of artists. This one gives me a chance to present myself to a new audience, which we will surely enjoy.”

Celebrating 35 Years

This performance coincides with a personal milestone: 35 years in the music industry. “I am celebrating my 35-year career and trying to create a repertoire that showcases these years. It’s a lifetime of music. I am truly looking forward to performing there.”

Crafting the Setlist

He considers how to curate a repertoire for such a lengthy career: “I aim to choose songs that resonate with me and still represent who I am. Some early career songs no longer feel relevant at this stage of my life, but others still do. Ultimately, the setlist comes together organically. I exclude songs that don’t fit, but many beg to be played again. There will be a mix of tracks I’ve revisited and those that have been with me throughout the years.”

Essential Tracks

Certain songs simply must be included. “Indeed, there are tracks that have to be a part of it.”

Connection with Fans

The celebration with his audience has been remarkable: “We’ve had several concerts, and the audience response has been wonderful. They’ve been very emotional and beautiful performances, with an engaged and enthusiastic crowd. I’m enjoying every moment.”

Frequency in the Canary Islands

Iván reflects on his history with the Canary Islands: “I wish I could come more often, but logistical issues sometimes hinder performances here. Past tours required extensive equipment, making it challenging. I would love for the Islands to be closer in terms of accessibility for performing.”

Generational Change in the Audience

He notes a refreshing generational change in his audience: “Yes, I see younger faces at my concerts. I also spot familiar faces from many years ago. As artists, we connect with our audience over time, and new generations are joining us.”

Recognising Long-Time Fans

He acknowledges fans who’ve supported him throughout his journey: “I recognise some familiar faces. With social media, it’s become a bit trickier, but in the past, we had almost direct contact with fans, especially when we were smaller and there weren’t huge crowds. People have been growing alongside us, and many I’ve met again over the years.”

Nerves Before Performing

Does he still feel nerves before taking the stage? “There are always nerves; that never goes away.”

A Good Sign

He reflects on the importance of this feeling: “Those in the know say that nerves are necessary. If they’re absent, something might be wrong.”

Future Plans

As for what lies ahead after this anniversary tour, he shares, “I haven’t made any specific plans yet, but I suppose the next step will be to create and record another album, which is what I primarily do. Tours lead to albums, and that has always been my way of life.”

Reflecting on the Future

He recognises the value of this reflection: “This tour serves to see where we are and where we want to go. It’s important to reflect on this, but it often comes naturally. Reflection is part of this work; without it, one can easily feel lost.”

A Memorable Concert for Tenerife

Iván concludes with his hopes for the concert: “I want the audience to leave with memories of a beautiful and exciting concert, enjoying songs that have been part of many years of life. I’m eager to perform in Tenerife and share this celebration with the local audience.”
