Tenerife’s Cabildo Unveils Mobility Projects in Los Cristianos
The Cabildo of Tenerife has announced two initiatives aimed at enhancing mobility in Los Cristianos. This Friday, the island institution revealed plans for the renovation of the southern roundabout connecting to the TF-1, alongside the development of a future transport interchange associated with the undergrounding of Chayofita Avenue and its connection to Juan Carlos I Avenue. The aim is to “streamline traffic, enhance road safety, and reorganise movement” in one of the busiest areas in the south of the island.
Roundabout Renovation
According to the Cabildo, the first initiative involves transforming the current “hippodrome-style” roundabout into a “circular roundabout of greater capacity, with an exterior diameter of 66 metres, turbo roundabout signage, and new segregated branches that will allow for direct movements without overloading the central ring.”
Additionally, the project is set to improve “the pavement, drainage, signage, and other road safety elements.” This initiative has an estimated investment exceeding two million euros, with a projected execution period of eight months. The reform aims to “streamline traffic and improve safety,” as highlighted by the island institution.
Chayofita Avenue Development
The second initiative focuses on reorganising mobility around Chayofita Avenue by constructing a transport interchange and undergrounding several roadways. The proposal is based on “the integration of public transport, taxi services, quick stop areas, rotational parking, pedestrian pathways, and new surface public spaces,” they emphasise.
The plans also revise the initial approach to the undergrounding project. In this context, they explain that Chayofita Avenue “will be depressed to pass beneath the Juan Carlos I roundabout and connect with the TF-665.” Furthermore, a “prolongation towards the Pedregales area” has been incorporated to separate current traffic in Los Cristianos from future movements related to the urban development of El Mojón.
Similarly, they anticipate extending “the underpass towards Hermano Pedro de Bethencourt Street” to facilitate “a potential connection with the motorway and an additional exit for the Los Cristianos-El Mojón area.”
Project Status
It is noted that both the interchange and the undergrounding are currently in the preliminary design phase, meaning the financial estimates “are still indicative and will need to be finalised during the drafting of the construction project and subsequent bidding process.”
