The project has secured funding of €250,000 with a four-month execution timeline.
The City Council of San Cristóbal de La Laguna has opened the bidding this week for the rehabilitation and improvement works on the existing BMX circuit located in La Vega park, close to the city centre. Interested companies have until 23rd June to submit their proposals for this project, which is financed with €250,410.38.
Details of the Project
Councillor for Works and Infrastructure, Ángel Chinea, explained that “this initiative, developed in collaboration with the Sports Department, will have a four-month execution period and will completely renew a facility that many people use daily for this type of sport.”
Chinea elaborated that “the focus will be on repairing the start ramp of the circuit, which is where athletes propel themselves to begin their run. Furthermore, the remainder of the track will be renewed with various layers of materials that ensure greater durability and safety for users.”
Additional Interventions
Additional complementary interventions will also be undertaken, such as reinforcing the retaining wall situated at one of the circuit’s main bends, which may serve in the future as a platform for seating and observation areas. Also, the perimeter fencing of the area, which currently shows signs of deterioration, will be improved.
Councillor for Sports and President of the Local Sports Organisation, Badel Albelo, highlighted that “this is one of the most important areas for outdoor sport in the municipality, making this procedure crucial for ensuring the maintenance and refurbishment of this facility, which is a key asset for our citizens.”
Albelo further noted that “our Department has promoted additional contracts to address certain deficiencies in this space, particularly due to damage caused by adverse weather conditions in recent years, such as heavy rainfall affecting various components of the track.”
Ensuring Safety and Durability
This additional series of actions includes terrain cleaning, rebuilding and profiling the jumps with a mix of aggregates, followed by watering and compacting. All these steps are necessary to ensure the durability of the infrastructure, prevent accident risks, and ensure the smooth running of sporting activities.
The City Council of La Laguna is undertaking this project by taking into account assessments from technical staff responsible for overseeing these infrastructures, as well as feedback from athletes, clubs, and groups involved in these sports.
