SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 5 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of the Canary Islands has announced the creation of an “employment accelerator”, set to be unveiled at the end of June. This tool aims to enhance the connection between training and stable employment in strategic sectors that offer high added value.
This was highlighted by Manuel Domínguez, the Vice President of the Canary Islands Government, during a parliamentary committee session. He noted that the “mismatch” between job supply and demand is the “main challenge” in filling vacancies in essential productive sectors, such as industry and construction.
In a statement, the councillor emphasised that for years, training has been provided for jobs that “no longer exist or are already filled”, without focusing on emerging profiles that offer high added value. He highlighted the “essential” role of universities and vocational training. “During this legislative term, we have launched 184 new training cycles aimed at aligning job supply with demand.”
PRODUCTIVITY COUNCIL
Domínguez further added that collaboration with the business community is “crucial” for aligning educational offerings with actual demand, as has been done with industry and construction through agreements. “The strategy to respond swiftly to labour market needs involves combining educational planning, modernisation of vocational training, collaboration with the business sector, and new tools like this accelerator,” he stated.
The councillor also defended the importance of the Canary Islands Productivity Council as a “relevant body” for formulating a common policy and “addressing the productivity issue in the Canary Islands”. During his speech, he noted that this Council, composed of social agents, employer associations, unions, and universities, has already met three times. It has prepared an initial conceptual report that will be approved at the next meeting on 1 July, detailing a realistic map of overall productivity in the islands.
