Socialist Parliamentary Group to Address Housing and Education Issues at Canary Islands Parliament
The Socialist Parliamentary Group is set to present several initiatives at the plenary session of the Canary Islands Parliament on 9 and 10 June. These initiatives will focus on critical issues such as housing rental problems, increased state funding for the archipelago, and the situation of nurseries under the Department of Social Welfare.
Housing and Funding
The Socialists will pose a question to the Presidency of the Government regarding whether the regional government plans to declare areas of residential market tension in the Canary Islands. This move aims to start addressing rental issues affecting thousands of families on the islands.
Another inquiry will be directed at the Vice President and Minister of Economy, Industry, Trade, and Self-Employment. The PSOE wishes to know if the government believes that the public administrations in the Canary Islands have sufficient financial leeway following the central government’s announcement concerning increased resources for autonomous communities and local entities. According to the Socialist initiative, this update on transfers and surpluses could lead to a rise in resources for the Canaries, prompting the group to seek clarification on its potential impact.
Education and Nurseries
The PSOE will also question the Ministry of Education regarding its interpretation of institutional neutrality in relation to potential limitations on activities, conferences, talks, meetings, or events within educational centres. Furthermore, they will demand answers from the Ministry of Social Welfare regarding measures to halt the closure of the Anaga Nursery in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the Las Folías Nursery in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, as well as the maintenance of the network of nurseries under this ministry until their transfer to Education.
Social Welfare and Health
As part of their proposed initiatives, the Socialists will inquire about delays in managing funds from the State Pact against Gender Violence allocated for 2026. They will also seek explanations regarding the government’s plans to address the shortage of public places in services for individuals with disabilities, alongside a formal request to the Health Ministry about the public blood donation service management in the Canary Islands.
Other Initiatives
Additionally, the Socialist Group will raise a question to the Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice, and Security on the resources earmarked for creating a DNA bank for victim identification. They will also query the Ministry of Territorial Policy about plans to strengthen urban planning regulations and the Ministry of Tourism and Employment regarding the progress of the 2025 budget execution and objectives for improvement this year.
Non-Law Propositions
In terms of Non-Law Propositions, the PSOE will present an initiative aimed at promoting shared teaching in educational institutions across the archipelago, with additional resources, training, and teaching coordination. The group will also advocate for a PNL to develop a Comprehensive Prevention Plan for Gambling Addiction among Youth, given the impact of online gambling on younger populations, alongside another proposal for the expansion of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Free Trade Zone towards the Granadilla industrial estate.
