The House of Culture of Buenavista del Norte hosts from yesterday until tomorrow the I Conference on Anthropology of Death, which is part of a research project and dissemination of cultural heritage linked to the death that has been taking place since the end of 2019 in this town on Isla Baja. It is an initiative of Prored that has the collaboration of the City Council and the financing of the Canary Islands GovernmentCultural Heritage and the Canarian Institute for Cultural Development.
The main objective of these conferences is the dissemination of research work that “has the study of death as a central element, from different perspectives linked to the humanities.” It is also intended to value heritage “both to respond to new research and to the development of dissemination, dissemination and enhancement actions of spaces through products or services for the tourism sector.”
During the three days of activities, experts will pass through the northern municipality that they have or are developing research on death in the Canary Islands, on which “they will give a complete vision regarding a subject that draws the attention of historical research”, underline the organizers.
Some of the scheduled conferences are entitled Funerary archeology on the island of Tenerife, Rituals and beliefs about death in the Canarian society of the Modern Age, The paths linked to death in Buenavista del Norte or The cemeteries of San Rafael and San Juan. In addition to the technical presentations, the premiere of a short documentary about the so-called Mass of Darkness will be screened, a theatrical cultural walk will be organized on stories of witches based on stories and tales of the place designed by Diego Pun Ediciones and the show Agarrando Death with the hands, by Juan Carlos Tacoronte. The events are scheduled in morning and afternoon sessions that can be followed live through the City Council’s social networks.
