SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 1st May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
An open letter has been sent by the Campaign to Save La Tejita to the President of the Tenerife Council, Rosa Dávila, urging the cancellation of the Motor Circuit project – which has already been awarded 44 million Euros – and the allocation of a portion of the funds towards acquiring the land intended for a hotel development near La Tejita beach.
“Such a move would restore to the people of Tenerife one of the most iconic landscapes of the island, prevent an environmental disaster, and address one of the key demands of various groups and activists. It would be a significant stride in demonstrating that politicians on the island, across different administrations and political affiliations, possess empathy, common sense, and a willingness to cooperate, coordinate, and solve issues,” the letter states.
The platform highlights that the Ombudsman has highlighted that the project “fails to meet numerous essential requirements,” rendering it “in legal limbo,” and that should it proceed, it would involve the promotion of a public work close to 50 million Euros “that does not comply with current regulations.”
“Furthermore, it should be noted that rectifying the extensive list of requirements would lead to a substantial escalation in project costs, potentially rendering it unviable. The vast majority of citizens never supported the construction of a Motor Circuit, will not use it, and are averse to their tax Euros being allocated to it,” they emphasize.
Hence, they implore the President to “take the lead” and assist the Granadilla City Council in acquiring the land and integrating it into the Montaña Roja Natural Reserve.
“Actions speak louder than words, and you have the chance to work in the best interests of the people you serve. We eagerly await your response,” the letter concludes.
