San Miguel de Abona Approves Record Budget Amid Opposition Protests
On Monday, San Miguel de Abona’s council approved a preliminary municipal budget of €31,118,874 for 2026, marking the highest in the town’s history. However, a protest from the PSOE party overshadowed the session, leading to their exit after the council rejected their proposed amendments.
This budget represents a 10.44% increase from the previous year and focuses on public services, social action, urban maintenance, sanitation, public safety, and various municipal infrastructure investments. Mayor Arturo González stated that the budget supports the government’s objectives while maintaining municipal finances.
In contrast, the PSOE accused the ruling Coalition Canaria party of restricting the opposition’s ability to debate the crucial financial document. They argued this lack of discussion limits their role within the council.
The council highlighted the significant population growth in San Miguel de Abona over recent years, emphasising the need to adjust public services accordingly. A significant portion of the budget, with €15.97 million allocated, is dedicated to enhancing public services, while police funding accounts for 7.8%.
The social sector also receives notable attention, with nearly €3.74 million earmarked for welfare programmes, including emergency aid and educational support. Additionally, a proposed investment of €850,000 aims to create over 80 jobs through social employment schemes.
Investment projects include refurbishing roads, upgrading technology, and enhancing community facilities throughout the town.
The PSOE’s walkout during the budget approval process raised concerns about democratic practices within the council, as they believe the local government hastily moved the approval forward without adequate time for debate.
