The town of La Laguna has introduced two intelligent pedestrian crossings on César Manrique and La Unión avenues to enhance road safety. These smart devices are now operational in the Guajara area, which sees heavy foot traffic from students and residents.
Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, along with local councillor Badel Albelo, recently visited the site to observe the new technology in action. They highlighted its importance in signalling to drivers the presence of pedestrians, particularly near the University of La Laguna, tram stops, and shopping centres.
Gutiérrez stated that the upgrades would improve visibility at these critical spots, responding to public requests for better safety measures. “This innovation allows drivers to see pedestrians well in advance,” he said, complementing existing road signage.
Albelo added that plans are underway to install a similar device on Avenida de Los Menceyes, based on successful implementations in other regions. They are also identifying additional locations for these upgrades, guided by feedback and reports from the local police.
The intelligent crossings feature illuminated warning lights, volume radar, and independent vertical signage. In April, another safety measure was introduced near the Hospital Universitario de Canarias, where a traffic light with ground projection aims to prevent accidents involving distracted pedestrians.
