Preparation Underway for Temporary Fencing at El Polvorín

Surrounding El Polvorín is being prepared for the installation of a temporary fence to protect the building and its gardens. This initiative, supported by political forces within the Ciudad Sostenible Commission, will help preserve this heritage site while plans for a permanent enclosure are processed, facilitating its eventual opening.
The decision follows the completion of renovation works led by Ciudad Sostenible, directed by David Hernández, which have restored value to a distinctive element of the port’s coastline. Municipal technicians and the project management team noted the need to secure the site against occupation, vandalism, or misuse that could jeopardise the investment.
A Much-Needed Intervention
The operation, coordinated with Public Works and General Services led by Alonso Acevedo, includes the installation of a perimeter metal fence, of the Hércules type or similar. The work involves excavation for posts, concrete bases, structural elements, and access gates.
El Polvorín, an old gunpowder store associated with the Castle of San Felipe, was rehabilitated last year after decades of underutilisation. The municipal goal is to conserve it until its management is defined, opening it as a multifunctional space for culture, arts, and community activities.
