Exhibition Launch
The Exhibition Hall of the Parliament of the Canary Islands hosted the inauguration of the exhibition ‘Ilustradoras & Ilustradas 6’ on Monday. This project, organised by the Canary Foundation for the Promotion and Study of Narrative in Images Cinema + Comics, has become a key initiative for promoting the work of women in the fields of illustration and comics.
Project Overview
The exhibition is part of a multidisciplinary project that includes a travelling show in both physical and virtual formats, a series of virtual meetings with some of the participating artists, and the publication of a collective book.
Its objective is to contribute to the dissemination of artistic creations by women from the islands, while also encouraging female participation and the inclusion of underrepresented groups in the fields of illustration and graphic narrative, according to a statement from the Parliament.
Dignitaries in Attendance
The inaugural event was attended by the Second Vice-President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Gustavo Matos; the Ombudsman, María Dolores Padrón; the Commissioner for Transparency of the Canary Islands, Noelia García; the President of the Cinema + Comics Foundation, Francisco Pomares; and the Deputy Ombudsman, Ana María de León.
Significance of the Initiative
During his speech, Gustavo Matos emphasised the importance of initiatives like this in correcting historical imbalances in the cultural sphere.
“Traditionally, art has been attributed to men, and the work of many women has been overlooked. Thankfully, we live in different times, and women are beginning to take their rightful place,” he noted.
Francisco Pomares praised the continuous growth of a project he described as “unstoppable.” He explained that “more and more illustrators are keen to participate,” with around 350 creators currently linked to the initiative.
Ana María de León highlighted that the project has aimed from the outset to “forge a path towards freedom and equality,” creating spaces for recognition for artists and promoting greater female presence in the cultural sector.
María Dolores Padrón expressed her gratitude for the support of the institutions that have enabled the development of this initiative and underscored the importance of continuing to promote actions that highlight the art created by women. “Now the illustrators are being recognised,” she affirmed.
