Sismovolcanic Activity Intensifies in Tenerife
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has detected an increase in seismic and volcanic activity beneath the island of Tenerife. A total of 221 events were recorded between 21 and 22 June 2026, of which 89 were localised.
Location of Activity
According to the IGN, the activity is primarily concentrated to the west of Las Cañadas del Teide, affecting the municipalities of Guía de Isora, Vilaflor de Chasna, and Santiago del Teide. The events have been located at depths between 10 and 15 kilometres, with magnitudes lower than 2.0 mbLg, meaning they have not been felt by the local population.
Similar Episodes
The institute indicated that the recorded signals are “compatible with fluid movement at depth.” However, it stressed that this episode is “similar to others detected in previous months” and, for the time being, does not indicate “an increase in eruptive risk in the short or medium term.”
On Monday, the IGN also informed the Government of the Canary Islands’ Civil Protection Service about the increased frequency of seismic activity in Tenerife, in line with protocol. In this regard, it maintains continuous monitoring of volcanic and seismic activity on the island through a network of over 100 stations installed in Tenerife.
