Minister Highlights Successful Management of ‘Hondius’ Case
The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, has praised the Spanish Government’s handling of the cruise ship ‘Hondius’ after concluding the quarantine for passengers without any reports of hantavirus infections in the Canary Islands.
In a statement posted on social media platform ‘X’ this Sunday, he described the anchoring and disembarkation operation in Tenerife as a “success”.
“The Spanish Government acted with rigor and responsibility. And the Canary Islands, following a request from the World Health Organization, showcased itself to the world as the safe port it is, capable of activating high-standard protocols,” he stated.
Call for Serious Reflection
Torres urged for a “serious reflection” on the events surrounding this cruise ship. He reminded that the Canary Islands is an European territory with a privileged position in the Atlantic Ocean for commerce, tourism, and, if necessary, providing assistance reliably.
In this context, the minister emphasised that “alarmist, unfounded and scare-mongering messages do nothing but lead to confusion and embarrassment.”
“No infections in the Canary Islands from the Hondius: the local population was also preserved rigorously, scientifically. Let us shed our complexes. Thanks to the island’s population, particularly of Granadilla and Tenerife, who rose to the occasion,” he concluded.
