Santa Cruz de Tenerife Enhances Pedestrian Safety Near GOFit Complex

Improvements to Accessibility and Safety
The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has commenced works to enhance accessibility and road safety around the GOFit sports complex, located in the Tomé Cano area. This initiative includes the installation of two new pedestrian crossings and alterations to the pavements to ease access for users. The project, spearheaded by the Department of Mobility and Universal Accessibility, is a response to the increased flow of pedestrians since the opening of these sporting facilities.
New Crossings for Increased Safety
The Mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, noted that this initiative addresses a need identified following the launch of the sports complex. He explained that the measure would improve safety and accessibility in a densely traversed area, while also adapting public spaces to new urban needs.
Evelyn Alonso, the Councillor for Mobility and Universal Accessibility, emphasised that the new crossings will facilitate connections between both sides of the road, making access to the sports facilities more convenient.
Key Features of the Project
The project includes the construction of adapted pedestrian crossings and the installation of tactile paving to assist visually impaired individuals. Additionally, the works will feature an expanded central refuge island for pedestrians, aimed at bolstering safety during road crossings and complying with current accessibility regulations.
The total investment for this endeavour amounts to €28,554.41, with an estimated completion timeframe of one month. Work began this week, focusing on the creation of a pedestrian crossing on Heliodoro Rodríguez López street and another on La Mutine, alongside the adaptation of pavements and associated signage.
Response to Increased User Traffic
The City Council highlights that the opening of the GOFit sports complex has substantially increased pedestrian traffic at this city point, necessitating intervention for safer movement. This initiative aims to adjust urban infrastructure to the evolving mobility landscape in the area, thereby enhancing both road safety and accessibility for all users.
