Santa Cruz de Tenerife Advances Plans for the Return of the Police Intervention Unit (UNIPOL)
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is making significant progress in reinstating the Police Intervention Unit (UNIPOL), with plans to launch it before the end of 2026. Selected officers for this specialised unit are currently undergoing specific training at the Los Campitos police facilities.
Focus on Citizen Safety
According to the local council, the training aims to ensure “the effectiveness of the unit in actions related to citizen safety, prevention, and police intervention”. This “new UNIPOL” will operate in coordination with other security forces and bodies.
Specialised Intervention
The council emphasises that the reinstatement of this unit seeks to “increase the operational capacity of the Local Police and strengthen police presence in the municipality’s neighbourhoods”, particularly in situations requiring specialised intervention.
A recent directive has been issued to expedite the processes necessary for UNIPOL to be operational before the end of 2026. The goal is to equip the unit with the necessary human, material, and logistical resources to become “a benchmark in citizen safety”.
On Wednesday, both the city’s mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, and the Councillor for Citizen Safety and Emergencies, Gladis de León, visited the training sessions for the officers who will be part of UNIPOL.
