A new earthquake was recorded on Tuesday in the Canary Islands by the Geographic National Institute (IGN), this time in the Tenerife municipality of Santa Úrsula.
According to the IGN website, which tracks earthquakes of magnitude 1.5 or higher or those felt by the population, this was the only tremor recorded with these characteristics during the day.
Specifically, the tremor occurred at 00:46 hours, to the southwest of Santa Úrsula, at a depth of 23 kilometres. Its magnitude was 1.6.
Recent Data from the Weekend
Since last Saturday, the IGN has recorded a total of 14 earthquakes of magnitude greater than 1.5. In fact, five of them exceeded 2 points.
These were located in the Atlantic and on the island of El Hierro. The largest of all, measuring 2.5, was recorded in El Pinar on the 13th.
What to Do During an Earthquake?
Although the earthquakes that occur in the islands are not usually particularly strong, it is advisable to be prepared and know how to act in such a situation. For this, the IGN offers a series of tips on what to do during an earthquake:
- Drop, take cover under a table, and hold on to it
- Remain calm and maintain balance as much as possible
- Inside a building, stay away from furniture, windows, and lamps
- Outside, move away from buildings, walls, and power lines.
- If driving, stop in a safe location, turn on hazard lights, and remain in the vehicle.
- If using a wheelchair, stop in a safe place and protect your head with your arms
- In a mass gathering area, protect your head with your arms and take cover under seats and tables
