Drago Fuerteventura Becomes Officially Independent Organisation
Drago Fuerteventura, the territorial unit of Drago Canarias on the island, has officially established itself as an independent organisation following its founding meeting in Fuerteventura and subsequent approval by the National Secretariat of Drago Canarias, as reported in a recent statement from the group.
Enhanced Autonomy
With this new status, Drago Fuerteventura gains its own autonomy “in decision-making that impacts the island.” Additionally, it will have “more resources, increased human management capacity, a distinct visual identity, and a greater ability to influence the territory.”
Leadership Continuity
The current spokesperson, Aceysele Chacón, will continue to lead the island organisation. Drago highlights her efforts over recent years and her “commitment to defending the territory” while improving “the living conditions of the local population.”
Following the official confirmation of Drago Fuerteventura’s establishment, Chacón expressed that it is “a very happy moment” for the members of Drago Canarias residing in Fuerteventura. She also emphasised that moving forward, the organisation will have the capacity to address “an increasingly diverse range of topics.”
Protecting La Cornisa
The statement includes remarks from the spokesperson, who praised the efforts around the protection of La Cornisa in Puerto del Rosario. She noted that they “reviewed documentation, engaged with residents, raised awareness on social media and in the press, and ultimately succeeded in getting the town hall to include the historic houses in the protection catalogue,” she affirmed.
Chacón highlighted that this case illustrates that “when civil society, social movements, and parties like Drago Fuerteventura work towards a common goal, many of the current issues affecting the island can be improved.”
Expansion of the Organisation
Drago Canarias states that the formation of Drago Fuerteventura reflects “the organic growth the organisation is experiencing in terms of activism.” The new island organisation becomes the fourth territorial unit of Drago Canarias, alongside Drago La Palma, Drago Tenerife, and Drago Gran Canaria.
The group also indicated that new appointments and formations across the archipelago are expected to be announced in the coming weeks and months. They encourage interested individuals to register for participation.
