Major Conservation Project for Historic Museums in Tenerife
The Cabildo of Tenerife has opened the bidding process for the conservation and maintenance project of four museum buildings located in Santa Cruz and La Laguna. The works are expected to last approximately five years. The Governing Board of the Autonomous Organisation of Museums and Centres (OAMC) will oversee the awarding of the contract, processed through the open and ordinary procedure. This announcement was made public on Monday, 15 June.
Project Details
The project involves a construction contract aimed at the conservation and repair of roofs, façades, and external woodwork of five properties that possess historical and architectural significance. One building is located in the capital, Santa Cruz, while three are in central La Laguna and one in Valle Guerra.
Planned Works
According to the specifications, the work will focus on the “envelopes” of the buildings, which include horizontal and sloped roofs, external and internal façades, as well as windows, balconies, and wooden structures. These elements are particularly vulnerable to weathering and the passage of time.
The objective is to combine corrective interventions, which are urgent or short-term, with scheduled preventive measures over a maximum of five years, intending to extend the lifespan of the materials and minimise emergency repairs whenever possible.
Budget Breakdown
The base budget for the contract is set at €2,236,127.84, including taxes, with an estimated value of €2,716,790.85, as per the particular administrative clauses (PCAP). The classification of work includes carpentry and joinery, roof repairs and maintenance, as well as painting renovations, alongside interventions in buildings of historical or architectural interest.
Bidding Lots
The bidding is divided into three lots, allowing the same company to bid and be awarded all three lots, provided they meet the requirements for solvency and classification.
-
Lot 1 pertains to the MUNA, located in the Old Civil Hospital of Santa Cruz, which also houses the Archaeological Museum, the Institute of Bioanthropology, and the administrative headquarters of the OAMC. Its estimated value is €1,144,355.88, with a base bidding budget of €941,892.91.
-
Lot 2, titled La Laguna, includes the Lercaro Palace and the Saavedra House, which are home to the Museum of History and Anthropology, as well as the Fonseca Baulén House, housing the CEDOCAM. All of these buildings are situated in the historical centre of La Laguna. Here, the estimated contract value is €268,154.38, with a base budget of €220,711.68.
-
Lot 3 is designated for the Casa de Carta in Valle de Guerra, also a seat of the Museum of History and Anthropology, with an estimated value of €268,154.38 and a base budget of €220,711.68. This lot is directed at companies specialising in the restoration of historic-artistic heritage properties of lower value.
Cultural Heritage Preservation
The Governing Board of the OAMC asserts, in the bidding documents, the significance of scheduled maintenance to prevent severe deterioration of these buildings, which are a vital part of the island’s cultural heritage. Over the five-year contract, the awarded companies will be responsible not only for the repair of leaks or visible damage but also for the crucial yet silent task of caring for the skins of the museums that safeguard a significant portion of Tenerife’s natural, historical, and documentary memory.
