Closure of Las Gaviotas Beach in Santa Cruz de Tenerife Due to Emergency Works
Las Gaviotas Beach in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will remain closed throughout this summer due to emergency works required on the hillside following detected landslides in the area. This decision, taken for safety reasons, will affect access until it is assured that passage is safe.
### Temporary Closure
The closure comes after the Santa Cruz City Council temporarily shut down the beach in early June, following the identification of potential landslides on the slope adjacent to the access road, near Playa Chica. Currently, the works are expected to keep Las Gaviotas closed for approximately one year, although the council hopes for a shorter timeframe and anticipates the beach to reopen by next summer.
### Technical Report
In statements to Televisión Canaria, Public Services Councillor Carlos Tarife explained that the emergency works have already commenced, with a report prepared by municipal technicians. Efforts have involved both direct access to the hillside and the use of drones.
Tarife detailed that the emergency work will focus on securing parts of the slope between Playa Chica and Las Gaviotas. He noted that access to the beach will remain closed until it is deemed safe, particularly during the time when works are taking place near the Playa Chica building. Coordination with local residents is also expected during this phase.
### Reinforcement and Removal
The Public Services Councillor mentioned that the aim is to reinforce some stones while removing others that may pose a danger. He emphasised that the council has acted promptly upon detecting the issue and thanked the municipal technicians for their efforts.
