Maintenance Contract for the Iconic Clock in Plaza de España
Those who stroll through Plaza de España daily know that there is no need to twist their wrists or check their phones to determine the time; they simply have to look up at the clock tower of the Insular Palace. Known as the clock of Plaza de España, it is more than just a timekeeping device; it is embedded in the sentimental landscape of Santa Cruz, having witnessed demonstrations, parades, public gatherings, and the everyday life of the city’s residents.
Preserving Santa Cruz’s Heritage
Given its significance to the city and the building itself, the island council has put out a call for tenders for a service contract specifically aimed at the maintenance and repair of this clock. The estimated value of the contract is set at €146,982, with a base budget of €87,616.95, including taxes, for an initial execution period of one year.
The contract also includes the possibility of two extensions, which will be mandatory for the awarded contractor, provided the council announces them at least two months prior to the expiration of the term. This ensures that, if the service is satisfactory, the clock will receive stable maintenance for several years without interruptions.
Tendering Process
The process is being conducted through an open procedure with standard processing, and interested companies must submit their offers electronically by 23 June. The contract refers to the “Maintenance Service for all elements comprising the Clock of the Tower of the Insular Palace of the Insular Council of Tenerife.”
In any case, the council aims for the clock’s maintenance to rely not simply on the best financial offer but on that which demonstrates a solid track record and guarantees, while also assuming specific social and environmental responsibilities. This approach aligns with the green contracting and social procurement strategies outlined in the tender documentation.
