SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 14 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has expressed his gratitude this Sunday for the “exemplary” attitude of the Canarian people, which contributed to the “success” of two “intense” days during Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the archipelago on 11 and 12 June.
In a message on the social media platform ‘X’, Clavijo remarked on the “great gift” that the Pope’s visit has been for the people of the Canary Islands, particularly for those who have been “on the front lines” attending to the migration emergency faced by the islands.
“It has been a gift for the people of the Canary Islands, especially for those who have been on the front lines caring for children, young people, and adults arriving on small boats to our shores, for those who rescued them at sea, cried out in anger and helplessness for not being able to save everyone, or accompanied them in their final moments,” he stated.
The regional president acknowledged that the messages conveyed by His Holiness during his visit inspired “hope” for achieving the “necessary shared will” to ensure that “the flight from hunger and war does not result in abandonment and indignity.”
“Personally, I can only express my gratitude to this people who have once again been exemplary and contributed to the success of two intense days. To His Holiness, thank you for your empathy, affection, and generosity,” the head of the Canarian Government concluded.
