Canary Islands Airports Welcome 4.1 Million Passengers in May

Canary Islands airports recorded a total of 4,109,171 passengers in May, showing no change compared to the figures reported in May 2025. Of this total, 4,091,752 were attributed to commercial flights. Among these, 1,938,069 travelled on domestic flights, which reflects a 0.5% increase compared to the same month last year, while 2,153,683 were on international flights, representing a 0.6% decrease.

Passenger Statistics by Airport

Gran Canaria Airport experienced the highest number of passengers, totalling 1,175,039, marking a 1.5% increase compared to May 2025. Following this, Tenerife South Airport had 938,372 passengers (-4.8%); César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport recorded 682,989 passengers (-0.8%); Tenerife North-Ciudad de La Laguna welcomed 636,405 passengers (+3.9%); Fuerteventura had 504,264 passengers (-1.3%); La Palma saw 133,687 passengers (+13.9%); El Hierro recorded 27,718 passengers (+11.7%); and La Gomera reported 10,697 passengers (-5.7%). Additionally, there were 38,970 aircraft movements, and 2,503 tonnes of cargo were transported.

January to May Accumulated Statistics

In the first five months of the year, Canary Islands airports registered 22,694,672 passengers, a 0.6% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Of the 22,599,593 commercial travellers, 8,650,681 were on domestic flights (0.7% increase) and 13,948,912 on international flights, a 0.4% decrease compared to the same period last year. Between January and May, 202,182 aircraft movements were recorded, with 12,986 tonnes of cargo transported.

Aena Group Airports

The airports within the Aena Group, which comprises 46 airports and two heliports in Spain, London Luton Airport, and 17 airports in Brazil, concluded May 2026 with 36,116,528 passengers, a 4.7% increase from May 2025. They managed 309,102 aircraft movements, 4% higher than in 2025, and transported 130,958 tonnes of cargo, a 3.2% increase from the same month last year.

Cumulatively, by May 2026, Aena Group airports had welcomed 150,874,452 passengers, a 4% increase compared to 2025. They recorded 1,303,821 aircraft movements (+2.9%) and transported 620,182 tonnes of cargo, which is 4.5% more than in the same period of 2025.

Traffic from January to May is experiencing an increase due to the scheduling boost in the early months of the summer season following the outbreak of the Middle Eastern conflict, as well as the transfer of passengers from rail modes earlier this year (following the train accident on January 18). These are considered temporary circumstances rather than structural changes in traffic behaviour.

Aena Airports in Spain

From January to May 2026, Aena’s network of airports in Spain recorded 124,606,562 passengers, representing a 3.7% increase compared to 2025. This growth is lower than that observed in the first five months of the previous year, which had a 4.7% increase compared to 2024. A total of 1,066,623 aircraft movements were operated (+3.6%) and 556,852 tonnes of cargo were transported, an increase of 5.1% over the same period in 2025.

In May, Aena’s network of airports in Spain recorded 30,690,644 passengers, marking a 5% increase compared to May 2025. Furthermore, 259,412 aircraft movements were managed, which is a 4.9% increase compared to May 2025, while 118,042 tonnes of cargo were transported, a 3.9% increase from the same month last year.
