Major Preparations for the Visit of Pope Leon XIV to Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The Mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, has issued a municipal decree ahead of the visit of Pope Leon XIV on Friday. A large turnout is expected, with people arriving from various locations across the Canary Islands and the rest of the country.
Mobility and Safety Recommendations
According to a statement from the council on Monday, a series of recommendations have been put in place regarding mobility, safety, and public space usage. This is aimed at “facilitating the smooth running of the scheduled events, minimising traffic disruption, and ensuring the normal operation of public services” during what is considered an exceptional day.
Key Guidelines
- Plan Ahead: Residents and visitors are encouraged to organise their travel in advance.
- Stay Informed: It is advised to consult official information channels.
- Use Public Transport: Private vehicle use should be avoided as much as possible, with public transport being prioritised.
- Follow Provisional Signage: Respecting temporary signage and following the guidance of security personnel is essential.
- Utilise Designated Pedestrian Routes: Attendees should use the designated pedestrian pathways provided.
The decree also includes recommendations for maintaining public spaces. It emphasises the importance of respecting garden areas, disposing of waste properly, and protecting urban furnishings and plant life in the city.
To further reduce travel around the event day, citizen service offices and registration assistance will be closed to the public throughout the day on June 12.
Pope’s Itinerary
As outlined in the decree, Pope Leon XIV is scheduled to arrive in Santa Cruz at 11:30 AM from La Laguna. He will tour various locations within the city aboard the popemobile. The route will include:

- El Pilar
- Villalba Hervás
- La Marina
- Surrounding areas of the Cabildo of Tenerife
- Avenida Marítima

The tour will conclude at the port area of Los Llanos, where the Pope will greet attendees before presiding over a homily at the port venue.
