The project involves a comprehensive intervention in the work of Bruno Giorgi, following various previous morpho-chemical studies.
On Monday, the Town Hall and the University of La Laguna signed an agreement to undertake the restoration and rehabilitation of the sculpture dedicated to Father Anchieta. This sculpture, created in 1960 by the artist Bruno Giorgi, has undergone various studies and analyses over the past eighteen months, highlighting the necessity of this comprehensive action, which the academic institution will undertake.
The signing of this project involved the participation of Lagunero Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, Rector of the University of La Laguna Francisco García, the Councillor for Cultural Heritage Adolfo Cordobés, the Deputy Mayor of the Local Corporation Fran Hernández, City Chronicler Eliseo Izquierdo, and technical representatives from both entities.
Luis Yeray Gutiérrez emphasised that the signing of this agreement transcends mere administrative formalities; it is a gesture on behalf of the city. He stated, “This is a public commitment to the conservation of heritage, the memory of Anchieta, and the cultural projection of our beloved municipality. This project combines scientific rigor, institutional transparency, and historical sensitivity, serving as a decisive step to ensure this emblematic symbol for our citizens is preserved in the best possible condition.”
For his part, Francisco García expressed his satisfaction at being able to leverage the university’s resources in service of society and the Town Hall. “On this occasion, we are involved in the maintenance and repair of a culturally invaluable asset using two of our best resources: the Cultural Chair of Father Anchieta and the Service for the Analysis and Documentation of Works of Art (SADOA).”
Adolfo Cordobés noted that “the restoration of the sculpture will be accompanied by complementary activities, including a cultural programme related to the anniversary of Anchieta’s death, which will be held from 16 to 19 June at the house named after him, situated near the Plaza del Adelantado. This programme, organised by the Cultural Heritage Department and the Cultural Chair of Father Anchieta, will delve into the life and works of the saint from a historical, scientific, and cultural perspective.”
The Casa Anchieta will also become the future Centre for the Interpretation of Father Anchieta, currently undergoing administrative processing, which will establish this venue as a hub for dissemination and study.
Technical Studies Prior to Intervention
The morpho-chemical studies conducted in 2024 confirmed the need for intervention. The sculpture currently exhibits surface alterations typical of over six decades of exposure to the elements, although it retains a sound metallic core. The restoration will enable the stabilisation of patinas, correction of pathologies, restoration of the granite base, and application of long-lasting protective systems.
The approved agreement outlines a comprehensive intervention with a municipal budget of €84,793.57, which has been increased from the initial technical study to incorporate scientific monitoring in 2027 and 2028, documentation, ongoing supervision, and advanced protective measures. Additionally, the university contributes €6,875 for scientific dissemination.
The agreement was signed on 8 June, the eve of the 429th anniversary of the death of Saint Joseph of Anchieta (9 June 1597). This timing reinforces the significance of the event, marking an institutional homage to one of the most influential figures in Lagunero and Canarian history.
Anchieta was not only an evangeliser and educator but also a poet, playwright, naturalist, linguist, and the founder of cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. His legacy extends beyond the religious realm, contributing to the international projection of La Laguna. Thus, the restoration of his monument is framed within a context of memory, identity, and historical recognition.
