Persistent Winds and Waves in the Canary Islands This Monday: Three Islands Under Yellow Warning

Strong Winds and Coastal Warnings

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a forecast for strong winds across the Canary Islands this Monday. There are warnings of occasionally very strong gusts, particularly in the southeast and northwest slopes of the mountainous islands. The sea state will also be a concern, prompting a yellow warning for Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and El Hierro from 18:00 due to coastal phenomena.

Minimal Temperature Changes

In terms of cloud coverage, islands to the north will mainly experience cloudy skies, with a slight chance of occasional drizzle in the early hours in the mid-altitude areas of the higher islands. Elsewhere in the archipelago, the weather will be mostly clear or with minimal clouds.

Temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable, though a slight rise may be recorded.

Expect Strong Winds and Rough Seas

At sea, northeast winds of force 5 to 6 are anticipated, possibly escalating to force 7 offshore in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, except along the southern coasts and certain areas of Gran Canaria. There are forecasts for strong swells, potentially increasing to rough seas offshore in these islands. Additionally, there will be a northerly swell with waves between one and two metres.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura

In Lanzarote, skies will be cloudy in the north and west, with clearer conditions anticipated in the afternoon. The south will see some cloud cover, although mostly clear skies are expected during the midday hours. Temperatures will see little change, ranging from 19 degrees Celsius minimum to 25 degrees Celsius maximum in Arrecife.

In Fuerteventura, cloudy skies are expected at the start of the day, gradually clearing during the morning. However, clouds will return to the north by late afternoon and evening. In Puerto del Rosario, temperatures are forecasted to be between 19 and 24 degrees Celsius.

Gran Canaria and Tenerife

In Gran Canaria, cloudy conditions will prevail in the north, with elevations below 900 to 1,000 metres, and there is a chance of occasional drizzle early in the morning in the mid-altitude areas. The rest of the island will be clear or partly cloudy, with some high cloud intervals. In the southern, eastern, and western mid-altitudes, temperatures could reach 30 degrees Celsius.

Tenerife will also have cloudy skies in northern regions below 900 to 1,000 metres, with a low likelihood of drizzle early in the northeast mid-altitude areas. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, temperatures are expected to range from 20 to 27 degrees Celsius.

La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro

In La Gomera, cloudy skies will dominate the north, with clearer conditions developing in the afternoon; the rest of the island will see clear or mostly clear skies. The trade winds will blow strongly in the eastern and northwestern slopes, with the potential for very strong gusts. In San Sebastián, temperatures are predicted to range from 21 degrees Celsius minimum to 25 degrees Celsius maximum.

In La Palma, cloud coverage will be present in the north and east at altitudes below 1,000 to 1,200 metres, with a possibility of drizzle in the northeast mid-altitude areas. Finally, El Hierro will also experience predominantly cloudy skies in the north, with trade winds potentially producing very strong gusts in the eastern slopes and northwestern tip.
