Santa Cruz de Tenerife Boosts Desalinated Water Supply for Residents

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has endorsed in a governing session the configuration and implementation of eight new water extraction wells at the Sea Water Desalination Plant (EDAM) within the municipality.

This endorsement came at the behest of the Empresa Mixta de Aguas de Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Emmasa), a subsidiary of the Sacyr group, and aims to enhance the production capacity of desalinated water in the area, as stated by the council.

The construction will be funded by Sacyr, in accordance with the agreement established with the City Council, which pertains to the bidder’s own financial contributions.

In a statement, the city’s mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, underscored how this initiative is “essential” to ensuring the future provision of desalinated water to the residents of Santa Cruz, especially given the challenges posed by climate change and limited water resources.

He elaborated that these new probes will facilitate the evaluation of the feasibility of water desalination in the event they yield productive results, and if so, they will cater to both current demand and future enhancements of the EDAM, thereby increasing the volume of desalinated water.

The desalination facility in the capital of Tenerife currently operates with 14 wells for seawater extraction and intends to expand its capacity to produce 40,000 cubic metres daily, maintaining a minimum extraction rate of 150 cubic metres per well each day.

The project is set to be executed over a period of 24 months with a budget allocation of 1,104,062.68 euros.

“This will enable us to further diminish our reliance on our own water sources, such as wells and tunnels, which are contingent upon rain,” clarified the First Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife.

Five of the new wells will be situated within the EDAM grounds, while the remaining three will be located outside, across the Vía Litoral, opposite Cueva Bermeja, in the vicinity bordering the breakwater, following the successful conclusion of previous surveys validated by the Port Authority.
