On February 15, the Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena in La Laguna was filled with hundreds of individuals commemorating the 293rd anniversary of the death of ‘La Siervita’. The event was a testament to the esteemed legacy of this iconic figure within the municipality.
The mayors of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and El Sauzal, Mariano Pérez, took part in the traditional offering that both town councils present annually to Sister María de Jesús. They joined the faithful in a day marked by reverence for the nun, who passed away in 1731.
The mayor of La Laguna emphasized the significant turnout of individuals who, from early hours, queued in the historic center to partake in the act of veneration. He highlighted that the event has gained increasing importance each year among the population of La Laguna and Tenerife, as well as among visitors in the city.
Born in El Sauzal in 1643, Sister María de Jesús ‘La Siervita’ relocated to La Laguna following the loss of her parents. She entered the Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena, where she devoted herself to religious work until the age of 88.
