SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 21st May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Both CCOO and UGT have released a joint statement this Tuesday expressing their opposition to the proposal put forward by Canary Islands’ President, Fernando Clavijo, to provide subsidies to employer contributions to social security for firms that raise salary payments above collective agreements.
As per the unions, any such increment should be mutually agreed upon in the negotiable sectors of operation – via collective bargaining – with the corresponding contributions being paid into the general social security treasury, which acts as a pillar for the entire “social welfare structure” of the State.
The labour bodies also assert that the Canary Islands’ Economic and Social Council (CES) is the institution where the involvement of social and economic actors in the economic, social, and labour policies of the region are effectively managed, and currently, it has not issued any opinions or official statements on this matter.
Therefore, they highlight that “any individual declaration by a leader, even that of its president, while commendable and respectable, lacks institutional endorsement as a representation of the collective intent of the legitimate entities comprising the plenary session.” of the Economic and Social Council”.
