The Tenerife Island Selection claimed the Pancho Camurria Trophy this morning, winning the Canary Islands Youth Selection Championship. Demonstrating their potential throughout the tournament, the Tenerife team topped off their journey by winning a hard-fought final 8-12 against Fuerteventura.
The Vecindario Arena, in Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Gran Canaria, hosted a duel where the Tenerife team took the lead from the start. Ismael de Armas played a crucial role in the early rounds, sidelining Tomás Cabrera and Ángel Morales, among others, quickly gaining a 3-7 lead.
The Majorero team decided to rely on their strongest men, with Gaumet Innouri, Guaire Rodríguez, and Roque Arbelo taking the three positions. This strategy allowed the Majorero team to level the match at 7-7. Tenerife’s manager, Honorio Ramos, entrusted the responsibility to their captain, Zeus Casanova, who successfully eliminated Guaire. After two intense rounds, Zeus claimed victory in the third, while Roque Arbelo kept Fuerteventura’s hopes alive by defeating Cristo León for an 8-9 score.
The stage was set for an exciting showdown, with Ismael de Armas continuing his display of skills, managing to eliminate Gaumet Innouri with a variety of techniques. At 8-10, Jonay Matoso fielded Carlos Cabrera, a fierce fighter who faced off against Zeus Casanova. Despite losing the first round, the Tenerife captain bounced back to win the next two, securing an 8-11 lead.
With Roque Árbelo as the last man standing for Fuerteventura, it was Francis Pérez’s turn to ensure victory against one of the tournament’s top fighters. Despite fatigue, the Fuerteventura representative resisted Francis Pérez’s power but eventually succumbed in the first round, also falling in the second and sealing a significant 8-12 victory for the Tenerife team.
