Today, the citizen initiative advocating for the preservation of Granadilla de Abona’s heritage (Defensabona), in collaboration with the local council, is hosting a special tribute to the renowned volcanologist from Tenerife, Nemesio Pérez. Pérez serves as the coordinator of the Canary Islands Volcanological Institute (Involcan). The event is scheduled to commence at 8:00 p.m. at the El Secadero cultural venue in the town of Granadilla de Abona.
Formed a year and a half ago, the group comprises local residents of Granadilla, aiming to protect the cultural and natural heritage of the area, and to raise awareness of any threats it faces. Isabel Álvarez, in her statement to this publication, highlighted the deep-rooted connections of the honouree to Chasnera: Nemesio Pérez’s mother, Carmen Rodríguez Rodríguez, was born in Granadilla de Abona.
Recently, Nemesio Pérez was awarded the Christiaan Huygens Medal in recognition of his significant scientific contributions to the field of geochemistry. This distinguished award, the first of its kind bestowed upon a Spanish scientist, was conferred during an international Earth Sciences conference held in Austria.
