The local government of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will commence the regeneration project on San Martín Street as part of the Special Plan for the Protection of the Historical Complex of The Toscal. The project will run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is estimated to last approximately six months.
As previously reported by DIARIO DE AVISOS, these renovation efforts will be overseen by the Municipal Roads department with a total budget of 500,000 Euros. The scope of work includes the installation of new sanitation, water supply, and storm drainage systems, as well as the replacement of the lighting network and telecommunications pipelines to facilitate the underground replacement of existing installations by various service providers.
The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, stated, “The aim of this project is to enhance and modernise this street to promote accessibility, which undoubtedly will contribute to the reinvigoration of commercial areas and enhance the overall appearance of the road.”
Councilor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife, outlined the project by stating, “The renovation will be divided into three segments: from the Santiago Street junction to the San Miguel Street junction, from the San Miguel Street junction to the Méndez Núñez Street junction, and from the La Rosa Street junction to the Santiago Street junction.” Tarife added, “Work will be carried out between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with each segment being closed off for 24 hours during the renovation process.”
Improvements to San Martín Street will involve widening the road to three meters and adjusting the sidewalk widths according to each segment while maintaining accessibility standards, as the current layout presents inconsistencies. This enhancement will ensure that two vital neighbourhood arteries are seamlessly connected and fully accessible.
Moreover, the rehabilitation will include the use of AC 16 SURF hot mix asphalt with modified bitumen NFU (from used tyres) for the pavement, reducing traffic noise. This project will necessitate modifications to some traffic light crossings on Méndez Núñez Street to accommodate the revised traffic flow.
Carlos Tarife emphasised that “the objective is to transform this central thoroughfare into an accessible space, revitalise commercial zones, and enhance the aesthetic appeal by providing wider sidewalks and shaded areas, which are currently lacking.”
Integrating Green Spaces for a Sustainable Urban Environment
The refurbishment of San Martín Street will include the installation of new tree pits and environmentally-friendly soil planters to promote vegetation growth. Additionally, an eco-friendly pavement will be utilised to reduce atmospheric pollutants and improve the asphalt surface.
